About

Ruth
HASSELL-
THOMPSON

In 2000, Ruth Hassell-Thompson was elected to the New York State Senate, representing the 36th Senatorial District (Bronx and Westchester Counties).

In 1993, Hassell-Thompson started her political career in the Mount Vernon City Council she served as Council Member, Council President and Acting Mayor.  Before starting her career in politics, Senator Hassell-Thompson had a thriving career in healthcare.

For almost three decades, as an established role model par excellence, Senator Hassell-Thompson committed herself to mentoring women and men in politics, civic engagement, and social services.  She authored and sponsored life-changing legislation during her tenure in the NYS Senate.

Among her notable achievements are:

  • In 2009, Senator Hassell-Thompson co-authored The Rockefeller Sentencing Reform Package which became law.
Senator Hassell-Thompson sponsored Senate Bill S6993B, a bill to ensure that information relating to access to reconstructive surgery following breast cancer surgery is provided to all breast cancer surgery patients.
  • In 2010, leading the way in Matrimonial Reform, Senator Hassell-Thompson was the Senate sponsor of New York’s No-Fault Divorce Law, which permitted the involved parties the opportunity to divorce without the aggression and pain associated with fault-divorce.
Senator Hassell-Thompson served on successive MWBE Task Forces under Governors Pataki, Paterson and Cuomo. Governor David A. Paterson signed four ground-breaking bills into law (S.8312, S.8313, S8314, and S.6888). As a result of her input, Senator Hassell-Thompson was known as the “Champion of MWBE programming.”
    • In 2011, Senator Hassell-Thompson co-sponsored the Marriage Equality Act which was signed into New York State law.
Senator Hassell-Thompson was the first person to Chair the NYS Senate Task Force on Domestic Violence.

  • In 2016, when Senator Hassell-Thompson retired, the Governor’s Office appointed her as Special Advisor for Policy and Community Affairs of New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

Message From HENRIETTA LYLE

RHTICE, The Executive Director

I am honored to serve as the Executive Director of an Institute that honors the achievements of a phenomenal and respected woman, the Honorable Ruth Hassell-Thompson.  The former New York State Senator’s work in politics and civic/social engagement are life changing and historic. For these reasons, Civically Re-Engaged Women (CREW) celebrates her by establishing the Ruth Hassell-Thompson Institute for Civic Engagement (RHTICE).

In September 2021, The RHTICE will be open for classes.  CREW’s flagship “Parity Politics: Candidate Training Course,” will transition and be integrated into the institute from its previous location at CUNY School of Professional Studies.  The Institute will provide online courses in Candidate Training initially.

Vocational Training Institute

The Ruth Hassell-Thompson Institute for Civic Engagement is named after the former NYS Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Mount Vernon). An African-American woman known for her inclusiveness on both sides of the aisle and cultivating mediation towards reform for over 16 years. Civically Re-Engaged Women (CREW) celebrates her legacy by creating the RHTICE.

The RHTICE is a Vocational Training Institute that will have three primary areas of study. The focus will be short-term learning of proficiency-based skills not offered in traditional academic settings. It will start small then grow into a series of nonpartisan political programming. This programming is dedicated to the advancement of underserved and underrepresented constituents who have a “fire” in their bellies to serve their communities. Additionally, cross training in non-profit leadership and entrepreneurship will also be offered as complementary synergistic studies, as political careers are not meant to be life-long.

Women represent the largest minority group of these constituents, and this is why our programming pays attention to and gives priority to women, minorities and other underserved or underrepresented populations.

The first of its kind, the RHTICE will provide online (and Video on Demand) professional development services from a variety of instructors who have experience and knowledge in their areas of expertise.

Prior to the creation of the RHTICE, CREW sponsored successful “Candidate Training Courses,” at The City University of New York, Murphy Institute and School of Professional Studies. “Parity Politics & Leadership” remains the flagship course at RHTICE, and we are adding more in-depth programming to cross-train leaders in skills used in Non-Profit Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

The RHTICE is an experiential approach where wisdom, historic acumen, ethics and breakthrough changes are presented in an oral tradition for all students to benefit. The Institute’s primary audience is minorities, women and others who have no political roots and a desire to genuinely serve constituents. We are a non-partisan institute, and we welcome women from all political parties.

Subsequently, the RHTICE will also house a digital repository in celebration of the work of Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson and other prominent women leaders.
