I am honored to serve as the Executive Director of an Institute that honors the achievements of a phenomenal and respected woman, the Honorable Ruth Hassell-Thompson.  The former New York State Senator’s work in politics and civic/social engagement are life changing and historic. For these reasons, Civically Re-Engaged Women (CREW) celebrates her by establishing the Ruth Hassell-Thompson Institute for Civic Engagement (RHTICE).

In September 2021, The RHTICE will be open for classes.  CREW’s flagship “Parity Politics: Candidate Training Course,” will transition and be integrated into the institute from its previous location at CUNY School of Professional Studies.  The Institute will provide online courses in Candidate Training initially.

As the Institute grows, we will develop a cross-training culture barre none.  Learners will be able to apply for various trainings in political campaigns, non-profit leadership or entrepreneurship disciplines.

The Institute is designed to accommodate working women with responsibilities, including mothers, caregivers, and career changers. Thus we use technology that can be conveniently and easily accessed.  The series of new online courses will offer professional development instructions by experts in various fields to enrolled learners. Additionally mentors and guest speakers, all of whom have practical experience and knowledge of the worlds of politics/business/civic engagement, will supplement the learners’ experiences.

We are providing a new concept for excellence in political cross-training as we challenge talented and creative future leaders to “step up” and share their “fire in the belly” to achieve greatness for their communities.  The Institute will equip women and minorities with the tools needed for success!  In short, we hope to elevate our alumni voices to become trusted future political leaders, with the goal of achieving gender parity through elected and appointed political engagement.

The RHTICE will focus on engaging underserved and underrepresented individuals who desire to serve their communities.  The skills our learners will adopt are transferable skills that are useful in public service, non-profit and entrepreneurial vocations.  Subsequently, in addition to stellar professional development programming, the Institute will house a repository of the milestones of NYS Senator Hassell-Thompson’s political career, along with other key colleagues in the NYS Legislature.

The Institute is virtual, powered by CREWTV an internet-based, Over-the-Top (OTT) innovative global television platform.  It is available via any Smartphone, or devices such as AppleTV, Amazon Fire or Roku.   Now, learners from anywhere around the world with Internet access can participate in acquiring these meaningful skills to run successful campaigns.  The possibilities are endless, and will open up endless employment and career opportunities for so many women.

See you in class!
